Here is a link to get a beta key and you don't even have to put up with Norroth's holier than thou attitude!
http://beta.heroesofnewerth.com/whoWehAw713saef/facebook.php
Also if you want a quick guide on playing the game here you go (courtesy of World of Ming):
Heroes of Newerth Noob Guide
Since a metric ****ton of people are getting into Heroes of Newerth (HoN) lately and S2 games is starting to give away beta keys to anyone that uses facebook (link for free key is located at bottom), I decided to put a quick beginner guide here courtesy of guildmates of ours. It should help siginificantly for people wanting to play HoN but never played DotA or never got into it too much. Although HoN is essentially a DotA clone with an entirely revamped engine and many new features, the guide could prove useful to hardened DotA veterans, as well. So, here it is (credits to Amna and other guildmates of ours that contributed):
This is for the people who recently got the HoN Beta without having ANY DotA experience. THIS IS LONG AND SERIOUS BUSINESS.
Warning: If you are a lazy ***** and want to pull a TLDR, at least read the summaries.
I. The Heroes & Starting
I-A. THE GENERAL IDEA
It's generally a good idea to start playing the game with either RD(Random Draft) or SD(Single Draft) in EM(Easy Mode). That way, you are presented with a limited choice of hero selection and get to exposed to different styles of game play. The general idea of what a hero's role is based on their attribute:
Strength: Tank.
Agility: Late-Game Carry / Ganker.
Intellect: Early-Game Carry / Nuker / Support.
This isn't true for all heroes but it's generally the case. When deciding on your first spell, it's generally best to choose any CC(or disables as they are known) move first. This is basically to ensure you have a way to save yourself if necessary. Try to avoid passive abilities until later.
When you're levelling, you want to be able to stay in your lane as long as possible in order to keep up with your opponent and possibly pass him. Having HP Regen helps a lot. In a game where your average HP is about 1k, 2HPS or 5HPS is pretty significant. To avoid burning your HP, do not tank creeps. Do not tank towers as well. Let the creeps do it. HP is not a bad thing to get. It is necessary for survival and can make all the difference. A lot of heroes are squishy and sometimes getting 2 Pretender's Crown early game is not bad.
I-B. EXAMPLE OF STARTING BUILDS
General Build: It's standard and solid. Works for pretty much every hero.
2x Pretender's Crown
6x Runes of Blight (They come in 3x and are found in the SUPPLIES section).
1x Mana Potion (If you are an Int hero)
Some Melee heroes can go with:
1x Marchers
3x Runes of Blight
Some Int/Mana Dependant heroes can go with:
1x Ring of the Teacher
3x Runes of Blight
Experienced players can even start with:
1x Lifetube
I-C. MANDATORY ITEMS
There's actually only really 1 Mandatory Item that every hero in the game that they must invest in and that is:
1x Marchers(+50 Speed).
There are 3 possible ways to use these and enhance the Marchers.
Enhanced Marchers: Cheapest to make. Good for tanking or just having defensive stats. Allows you to escape or chase very well. Generally recommended for STR Heroes.
Steam Boots: Stats. Stats for damage. Easy to assemble due to taking several cheap parts. Best to keep at STR early game just for having the HP. Generally recommended for AGI Heroes.
Post Haste: Takes the most amount of money saved up at a single given time. Allows you to port around the map and often escape due to having the most movement speed. Generally recommended for INT
Heroes. If you are incapable of saving up the necessary amount of money, just go for something else.
SUMMARY:
-Pick any Stun/Disable moves as your first ability.
-Do NOT tank creeps/tower while laning and leveling.
-HP and Regen is good for being able to stay in your lane.
-Get ******* Marchers every game.
II. Laneing
Once you got your starting items and skill, it's time to move out into a lane and start gaining levels. How you decide on which lane you start with can make a very huge difference in the game and how leveling turns out. There are several things to consider.
-Am I melee or ranged?
-How many melee/ranged do they have?
-Do I want a partner?
-Is there a partner that would work well with me? (Spell Synergy)
Etc.
For example, pairing 2 different stuns can definitely result in an early kill.
Since creeps generally meet at the topleft and bottomright areas of the map in the initial wave that means the creeps are closer to the Hell Tower on top and Legion Tower on bottom. If you are a melee and want to tower hug asap, then simply go to the respective lane. If you're a range, be considerate of this as melee can sometimes suffer quite a bit when leveling against range.
Mid is generally covered by a range hero but can definitely be taken by melee. There is actually a slight disadvantage for range and that is the terrain. It is possible for range attacks to MISS as they travel over the steep ground. Mid creeps are generally the first to meet in the initial wave before top and bottom because it is the shortest.
II-A. CREEP BLOCKING
In order to assist the "bringing creeps closer to our own tower" factor, there exists a concept called Creep Blocking. This is getting directly in front of your creeps and doing a stop-go motion in order to force them to do the same and delay them from reaching their pre-programmed destination and allow the opposing creeps to move closer to your tower. Practice it. Simply use your hero to act as a wall. The longer you can block them the greater the advantage it provides. Obviously this is best for the initial wave.
II-B. HARASSMENT
If you are a range hero against a melee, sometimes you may want to poke them while maintaining your distance if they move in close to attack creeps. Sometimes you can harass with spammable spells but normal attacks are generally best. If you are being harassed, move back a bit. There's no reason to take damage and allow them to set up for a possible kill.
General rule of thumb: If they move forward you move back. If you move forward they'll probably move back if they believe you are a threat.
II-C. LAST HIT & DENIES
Last Hit
When you are out in the lanes, you only get gold by landing the last hit/killing blow. Since you don't get experience until things actually die, you can generally just hang back and move in for the kill when possible just to strengthen your wallet. Being able to do this makes you a more solid player in general. This becomes vital when you are being harassed constantly.
Denies
Denying is landing the last hit on YOUR OWN creep/tower in order to prevent the opponent from getting it. There are several benefits for being able to do this. HoN is also extremely cruel in rubbing it in your face when a deny takes place.
When a creep is denied:
-Enemy MELEE heroes only get 66% of the experience while enemy RANGED Heroes only get 33%.
-They cannot get the gold from the creep.
You may only attack your own creep when it is beneath 50% HP.
When a tower is denied:
-The entire enemy team only gets half the rewarding gold. This actually prevents the team from receiving on average: 700 gold. (Extra gold is given to the person who lands a killing blow on the tower).
You may only attack your own tower when it is beneath 10% HP.
Being able to do both allows for a strong lane control game and gives you a huge advantage. Practice it. Even if you fail, at least you tried. PRACTICE. IT. RELIGIOUSLY. However, do not put yourself in danger to deny or last hit. Dying is never worth anything. There are also certain abilities in the game that does an automatic deny for you.
II-D. MISSING IN ACTION
When an enemy in your lane that you are watching suddenly disappears for about 30 seconds or so, it's probably a good idea at that time to make a MIA call in chat to alert your teammates about the possibility of an incoming gank.
A simple line works. Ex: Bot mia. Top mia. Purple mia. Whatever works. Just make it known so your enemy team doesn't pull off the gank successfully and get a lead.
Pay attention to your chat for such calls as well.
SUMMARY:
-Practice creep blocking.
-Practice last hitting and denying. Denying gives you a strong advantage and is part of a good lane game.
-You can deny creeps beneath 50% HP.
-You can deny towers beneath 10% HP.
-Practice it as often as reasonably possible.
-Call MIA as often as possible.
III. Ganks & Teamwork
Finally, the point of the game is to be able to OBLITERATE the other team. How well and how fast you can accomplish that is determined by your ability to work as a team. Sometimes, you may want to chain disable abilities to stunlock someone and take him down. It does not matter who gets the killing blow. There is no such thing as a "kill steal" as long as the person dies.
Understand the situation and go for flanks/pincer attacks if you have to. Try to do it as often as possible for the sake of taking their gold, gaining gold, and simply just getting a good lead.
However, remember that you may also be the target of such things. To avoid it as much as possible, BE AWARE AT ALL TIMES of your minimap and see WHICH enemies are on the map. If most of them are hidden, it's a good idea to expect a gank if you are out in the open. If your teammate is getting ganked, going to help him or saving him with a stun is a good idea as well. You have to learn to be able to determine whether or not a battle is winnable and decide on the appropriate move.
Also, try not to push too far by yourself. Using the river is a good way to determine whether or not you are going too far. If you are into their territory and they are all missing, it may be a good idea to turn around and retreat.
Your awareness is the key thing that makes you a better player. Stay alive, work as a team, and you'll probably win.
SUMMARY:
-Work as a team and gank a lot.
-Pay attention to your minimap.
-Save your teammates if possible.
-Try not to engage when you have a disadvantage.
-Don't. *******. Die.
IV. The Golden Rule
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO VICTORY.
V. Final Notes
If you've manage to read all this and can apply it in-game, congratz.
All topics covered were simply the basic mechanics. Obviously the game has a lot more depth and it will take experience before you become good. Just don't be retarded.
